Shape Shifters

Featured Artist: Patti Gibbons

Patti Gibbons, 56, has art studios in Kingston, NY and Rhinebeck, NY.

What types of arts and crafts do you do?
I have been an artist all of my life and worked in many mediums. I have decided that I need to narrow it down to a few, however – painting, drawing and mixed media.

What are your favorite mediums to use?
In paint I LOVE oil paint. There is nothing that can compare to the blending/sensuousness of the medium. I am also a paper addict, so collage provides me with my fix.

What is your favorite color?
As a colorist, that is difficult to answer, but I have many artworks where blue is a very strong component.

What inspires your art?
Everything in life inspires my work. A walk in the woods, a trip to a museum or
dinner with a friend. Life’s intense experiences. I never know where inspiration is going to strike, so I carry a Moleskine notebook and take lots of notes. Just be open, and it will find you in the oddest of places.

Who is one of your favorite artists?
I love so many. My early mixed media work was inspired by both the Pre-Raphaelites and the Surrealists, a rather odd combination! My painting is inspired by the Hudson River Painters and the soft painters, such as Inness and Whistler. Plus, I have studied with some wonderful Hudson Valley artists over the years who really influenced my journey as an artist.

What is your favorite section in Manny’s Art Supplies?
NO DOUBT THE PAPER SECTION!!

Have you ever met the original owners of Manny’s Art Supplies – Manny and/or Frieda Lipton?
Manny, in the shop years ago.

If so, do you have a fond memory you can share?
I was so into the shop that I didn’t chat..lol.

On a lighter note…

What is your favorite dessert?
Recently meringue filled with red current whipped crème. Anything with whipped crème and real butter rocks.

Where is a favorite vacation spot?
Anywhere in Europe if I can afford it, but Cape Cod is easier to get to.

Do you have any pets? What kind and what are their names?
Yes. Ever since I was 19 I’ve always had cats. Raphaela, a long haired tortoiseshell, and Ebo Jones, my black shorthair.
